Taken a wrong turn? Found yourself down a dead-end street? You might need to a do a U-turn. That’s where you turn in a half circle, so that you’re heading back in the opposite direction to where you were originally driving.

Animation of a blue car pulling over the the left, indicating right and turning into the lane travelling in the opposite direction.

Where should you practise this?

Pick a quiet, flat street that’s wide enough to complete the turn in one movement. You want to have a good view of traffic up and down the street.

To do the U-turn:

  • Check your mirrors, indicate left and pull in as close to the kerb as you can.
  • Check your mirrors.
  • Indicate right for at least three seconds.
  • Do one last check of your mirrors and over your shoulder.
  • Pull out and turn onto the other side of the road so you are now facing in the opposite direction.
  • Before you accelerate back into your lane, do a quick mirror and shoulder check to make sure no one is trying to pass you.

Are you test ready?
