Using the correct lane and being aware of the extra traffic are key when you're turning onto multi-laned roads.

Lane03 Turning right onto multilaned roads v1

Where should you practise this?

Choose a route where you can practise your left turns first, at a time that isn't really busy with traffic. Once you've got the hang of them, change your drive so you're moving on to right turns.

When you're turning onto multi-laned roads

  • Use the intersection approach routine.

Mirror Signal Course v12

  • Look at least twice in both directions to pick a gap big enough for you to move into.
  • Keep an eye out for vehicles going at different speeds in the two lanes. Also be careful of vehicles looking to move into the same lane as you.
  • Make sure you always turn onto the lane nearest you.
  • If you’re turning left, angle your car slightly to the left as you pull up to the intersection. When it's clear turn into the lane closest to the kerb.
  • If you’re turning right, move your car close to the centreline and facing straight ahead as you pull up to the intersection. When it's clear, turn into the lane closest to the centreline.
