Following distance
Test tips
- ‘Following distance’ is the gap between you and the vehicle immediately in front of you
- In good conditions (ie dry road, good visibility) your following distance should be at least 2 seconds
- In wet conditions, if it’s a bit hard to see, or you’re being tailgated, your following distance must be at least 4 seconds
- Once you’ve changed lanes or joined a traffic flow, check your following distance as soon as you can and adjust it, if necessary.
