After the restricted licence test
If you sat the restricted test in an automatic vehicle, you must only drive automatic vehicles unless you have a supervisor with you. Breaching the conditions of your restricted driver licence could result in 35 demerit points and a fine of $100.

After the full licence test
You can drive an automatic or a manual on your full licence, regardless of what you used for previous tests. A NZ driver licence lasts for 10 years. Your driver licence card will show an expiry date on the back. You’ll get a renewal reminder in the mail.
Information for coaches
A good way to use a driving instructor is 2 or 3 sessions in the beginning, then a few check-in sessions along the way before a final session to prepare for the restricted test.
