Steering in reverse (auto)

Steering a car while it’s reversing is tricky, but by following this Drive lesson and practicing, you’ll soon master steering your automatic vehicle in reverse.

Skills to work on before the test
Parking
You will normally be asked to do a reverse parallel park during the test, but in some cases, you may be asked to do a three-point turn.
Critical errors
Not signalling
Not signalling for at least 3 seconds before you:

pull out from a park
stop next to a parked car to begin parallel parking
pull in to stop at the kerb
move left or right more than a car width
change lanes
turn at an intersection
negotiate a roundabout.…
Coaching for the restricted licence test
This means when:

pulling out from or returning to the kerb
turning, changing lanes
turning left or right at a roundabout
exiting a roundabout
merging into traffic
crossing the centreline or the centre of an unmarked road
before parallel parking.
Information for coaches
Professionals can also be helpful if you find you are both struggling to make progress on a particular part of driving – reverse parallel parking is a common one. As a coach, you can ask to sit in the back of the car for the session.
