Indicating

When you have to indicate
You must indicate for at least three seconds before you:
- Pull away from or back to the side of the road
- Turn at an intersection
- Turn onto or off a road
- Change lanes
- Turn left or right at a roundabout
- Leave a roundabout
- Cross the centreline
- Merge into another lane (where your lane ends)
- Move left or right by the width of your car or more
- Stop next to a parked car to start a reverse parallel park.
Test tips
- Make sure you indicate, even if you can’t see any other road users around
- Remember that failing to indicate is a Critical Error in the restricted test
- Don’t turn your indicator on too early, or you might confuse other people about where you’re going
- In some situations, like small roundabouts, you won’t be able to indicate for three seconds; just indicate as soon as you can without confusing people.
