Indicating

When you have to indicate

You must indicate for at least three seconds before you:

  • Pull away from or back to the side of the road
  • Turn at an intersection
  • Turn onto or off a road
  • Change lanes
  • Turn left or right at a roundabout
  • Leave a roundabout
  • Cross the centreline
  • Merge into another lane (where your lane ends)
  • Move left or right by the width of your car or more
  • Stop next to a parked car to start a reverse parallel park.

Test tips

  • Make sure you indicate, even if you can’t see any other road users around
  • Remember that failing to indicate is a Critical Error in the restricted test
  • Don’t turn your indicator on too early, or you might confuse other people about where you’re going
  • In some situations, like small roundabouts, you won’t be able to indicate for three seconds; just indicate as soon as you can without confusing people.
