Complex intersections are busier intersections that often involve multiple lanes and traffic lights. Some may even have transit or special vehicle lanes (for buses or bike riders) leading up to the intersection.

Where should you practise this?

Plan a route that will have you passing through a few busy intersections. Practise going straight ahead as well as turning left and right.

When you approach the intersection

  • Look out for any road signs, markings and intersection controls, such as a Give Way sign, Stop sign or traffic lights.
  • If there’s more than one lane as you approach, look for arrows on the road to direct yourself.
  • If there aren’t any arrows on the road, use the left lane for turning left, the right lane for turning right and either lane to travel straight ahead.
  • Follow the intersection approach routine: mirrors, indicate, course, brake, gear, assess.
  • If a green light turns yellow you must stop if it’s safe to do so.

Once you’re at the intersection

  • Remember the blocking rule – make sure there’s room for your car on the other side of the intersection before you enter it.
  • Take care to select a safe gap. Look right, left and straight ahead. Then look again before deciding if it’s safe to move off. If in doubt, wait.
  • Keep a lookout for hazards by checking your mirrors and blind spots. Cyclists and motorcyclists in particular can be hard to see at intersections.
  • If you’re turning right at traffic lights that don’t have a right turning arrow, you can drive into the intersection and wait for a gap. Before you do, make sure no one else is waiting in the intersection. When there’s space to go, turn right, even if the light has changed to yellow or red. Make sure any straight-through traffic has stopped first.
  • If it’s got multiple lanes, make sure you stay in your own lane while driving through the intersection. When turning onto a multi-lane road, turn into the lane closest to you.
  • Check for any signs or road markings for a special vehicle lane. Unless your vehicle matches what’s on the sign or road markings, you’re not allowed to drive in it for more than 50 metres when turning. You must also give way to any vehicles (including bike riders) using the lane.
