Multi-laned roads have two or more lanes of traffic heading the same way and often have higher speed limits. With more going on, there’s also more to be aware of.

Where should you practise this?

Choose a route that involves roads with more than one lane. Motorways are a good place to practise.

Know your lanes

  • Unless you’re changing lanes, always stay completely within your own lane.
  • Use the left lane unless passing, preparing to turn right, or the left lane is closed or full of traffic.
  • If you want to go straight ahead at an intersection and there aren’t any markings on the road, then you can use either lane.
  • When you turn onto a multi-laned road, you must turn into the lane nearest you. This applies to both one-way and two-way streets.

Be aware of your surroundings

  • Scan 12 seconds ahead and regularly check your mirrors so you’re aware of surrounding traffic.
  • Pay attention to any road markings or signs ahead, for example speed limits, exits and lane closures.
  • Adjust your speed to suit the conditions. Think about the weather, road and traffic conditions and make sure you stay within the speed limit.
  • Keep at least a 2-second following distance in good conditions, or 4 seconds in poor conditions.

Exiting a multi-laned road

  • When you need to exit a multi-laned road, position your car in the correct lane with plenty of time to prepare for the turn.
  • Signs along the road often give you an idea of how far away a turnoff or exit is.
