This privacy statement applies to Drive. “Drive” when used in this privacy statement and the Terms of Use means this website found at www.drive.govt.nz, and the Drive Go app, and the Drive Community resources. It explains what personal information we collect about you, how we’ll use it and who we’ll share it with.

We do not collect personal information about you on Drive unless you choose to give it to us

The personal information we ask you for will depend on which service or feature you wish to use, but it may include your name, contact information, date of birth, gender, ethnic group and the type of driver licence you hold.

We will only use the personal information you give us for purposes related to Drive

This includes

  • enabling you to use Drive
  • communicating with you, and seeking your feedback about Drive
  • helping you track your progress and achievements through Drive
  • providing you with educational information
  • evaluating the effectiveness of Drive.

We may use your information to evaluate Drive

ACC may use your personal information to evaluate the effectiveness of Drive in reducing motor vehicle claims by matching data from users who have signed up to Drive against the ACC motor vehicle claims register. This will not affect any current or future ACC claims or any current or future driver licence applications and it will not be used for enforcement purposes. No individual will be identified in any reports, summaries or other documents that are produced resulting from the evaluation, whether they are published or not.

We may share your information with third parties providing support services on our behalf for Drive

This includes web and mobile app development and hosting providers, resource and publications providers and identify management (log-in) providers.

We analyse analytics tools to analyse web and app traffic and usage

We use Google analytics features, and cookies to help us understand how you interact with Drive, what pages you visit and what features and services you use. Ultimately it helps us ensure that Drive continues to meet user’s needs.

You can opt out of Google Analytics features through ‘Google Ad settings’ or by downloading the ‘Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on’.

You may choose to allow us to track your in-car location, speed and distance travelled when using the Drive Go app

We use the GPS sensors in your mobile device for tracking so that you can track your driving experience and we can provide you with helpful feedback and insights. Unless required by law, we will not share this information with any other person, and in particular, your speed data will not be shared with any enforcement agency or be used for enforcement purposes.

We encrypt and store your information in the Drive database

Your information may be stored for up to 10 years, after which it will be securely deleted.

You can choose to delete your Drive account at any time in your account settings

Deleting your account deletes all the personal information we hold about you, but we may continue to hold anonymised information for 10 years. Uninstalling the Drive Go app from your device will not delete or deactivate your Drive account. You will need to delete or deactivate your account through account settings within the app before you uninstall it.
