Download Drive Go and get started

When you first open Drive Go, you’ll need to sign up or use an existing Drive account to log in. Drive Go is integrated with the Drive website, so if you had an account on the website, you can use your same login details on the app and see your continued progress.

Drive Go can be used by both learners and coaches. While there is no coach specific view in Drive Go, coaches may wish to sign up so they can have their own access to the skills, learning points and videos.

If both the learner and coach download the app:

  • The learner can use their login details on their phone and their coach’s phone. In this case, both phones can be logged in at the same time and the coach can have full access to plan drives and monitor progress. Just make sure that only one person tracks the drive.
  • The coach and learner can both sign up with their own account. In this case, the coach can use their account to plan drives and view the teaching points, and the learner can track drives and monitor their own progress.

Home screen

The home screen displays overall progress through Drive Go.

Drive Go is set out in ranks: bronze, silver, gold, platinum, diamond and champion. Learners must complete each rank to move on to the next.

Each rank is achieved by completing the required skills and a number of drives. Some drives have to be completed at night. Your phone knows when it’s night, so you don’t need to do anything extra to record a night drive. To find out what needs to be completed for each rank, tap on the steering wheel icons on the road map.

Skills screen

The skills screen displays all the skills to learn. These are set out in 8 chapters. Use the top menu to navigate left or right to see all the chapters. The skills to be completed for each chapter are displayed underneath. Tap into a skill to view key information and video demonstrations.

If you’re just starting out, you should try to progress through the skills in order.

If you’ve already learnt some skills, you can mark them as ‘learned before’. You can do this from the skills screen by tapping the 3 dots in the top right-hand corner of each skill.

Creating a drive plan:

  • Select the skill you want to practise and tap on the ‘practise now’ button to add it to your drive plan.
  • You can add multiple skills to your drive plan by tapping the + button in your drive plan.

Go! screen

The Go! screen is another way to create and view a drive plan. Tap on the skills you want to practise and you’ll see them in a list with a recommended drive time.

Going for a drive:

  • Plan where you’re going to drive. Make sure you choose roads that match your experience level and have the features you’ll need to practice the skills in your drive plan.
  • Read the key information and watch the videos about each skill at home before your drive, or you can do this when parked in a safe place.
  • When you’re ready to start a drive, tap ‘begin drive’. GPS technology will track time, distance and speed.
  • The phone will need to be put away or in the hands of a coach while driving.
  • Once you’ve completed your drive and pulled over safely you can tap ‘stop’.

Reviewing your drive:

  • When you tap ‘stop’, you’ll be shown the skills from your plan. If you practised any additional skills that weren’t in your plan, you can add these.
  • Tap on ‘continue to feedback’ to review each skill. The feedback screen will display the key things you should have practised and ask you to rate how you’re feeling.
  • Rate where you think you sit for the skill, from learning the basics though to feeling good and test ready. This is an opportunity for learners and coaches to have a discussion on what went well and what needs further practice.
  • Finally, you’ll be asked what the road conditions for the drive were. It’s important to practice driving in a range of weather conditions so it’s good to have a record of this.

Once you’ve reviewed your drive, you’ll get a drive summary including the time and distance travelled, and the percentage of your drive that was within the speed limit. Based on your drive, you’ll also receive recommendations for the next skills to practice.

When you’re next connected to wi-fi, your drive will sync and update your dashboard.

Driving test screen

The driving test screen has 5 practice test drives you can do. These give you a chance to practise tasks and skills that will be in the restricted licence test.

Completing practice tests:

  • Select one of the practice tests (start with practice test 1). You’ll need to pre-plan a route. The app will tell you what road features you’ll need, such as a T-intersection with a give way sign.
  • Tap on ‘continue to skills’ to see what skills you’ll need to focus on.
  • Tap on ‘continue to overview’ to see the tasks you’ll need to do and how many times you’ll need to do each one.
  • When you’re ready to go, start tracking the drive. The coach will be able to access the driving tasks and skills and get prompts.
  • After your drive, rate how well you think you did on each of the tasks and skills and answer the questions about any errors you think you may have made in your drive.

Profile screen

The profile screen is where you can find your dashboard showing overall progress such as number of skills completed, achievements earned, and total time and distance travelled.

Important things to know

Safety first

You must not use Drive Go while driving.

Review each skill at home first or while parked safely. To review your driving plan or the key teaching points during your drive, you should pull over to a safe place and turn the car off. Then when you’re ready, put the phone away and start again. If you’re tracking your drive, you can pause it every time you pull over.

How Drive Go tracking works

One of the features of Drive Go is GPS tracking. Drive Go uses the GPS sensors in your mobile device to calculate drive time, distance and speed. This enables you to get feedback, monitor your progress through the ranks and to earn achievements.

Unless required by law, we will not share this information with any other person, and in particular, your speed data will not be shared with any enforcement agency or be used for enforcement purposes.

Drive Go does not store any location data.

You don’t have to track drives to use Drive Go. You can still build a drive plan and view the skill information without using the tracking feature. You just won’t be able to progress through the ranks or review your drives in the app.

If you don’t have the app – you can use Drive Go online

If you don’t have the app you can still access Drive Go content online. View each skill to access the key learning points, diagrams and videos. You can also test your road rule knowledge with a quick quiz.
